Joan L. Thomas, M.D., Medical Director, Cardiac Rehabilitation
The head of our Cardiac Rehabilitation team, Dr. Thomas is a cardiology specialist with a subspecialty in non-invasive cardiology. She practices at University Cardiovascular Associates and holds a certificate in cardiovascular disease from the American Board of Internal Medicine. For more, click here.
Jason J. Lyons, M.D., Medical Director, Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Dr. Lyons is board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He earned his M.D. from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, and completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Lyons has researched, written and taught on many topics related to pulmonary, cardiac and thoracic care. He is also a member of the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians and the New York State Thoracic Society.
Karen Pyle, R.N., B.S.N., M.Ed., C.E.S., Manager
Karen earned her B.S.N. from Keuka College and her M.Ed. in exercise physiology from Bowling Green State University. She holds certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine as a certified clinical exercise specialist, and from the American Council of Exercise as a lifestyle and weight management consultant. Karen is active in the New York State Association in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (NYSACVPR), where she has served two terms as President of the Central Region. She is also the President of the State for the NYSACPR. Karen was the Nurse Manager of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic for 15 years prior to coming to Unity.
Kathy Ross, R.N., B.S.N., Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse
Kathy has over 30 years of Cardiac experience at Unity Health System and Unity’s St. Mary’s Campus. Kathy received her R.N. from Monroe Community College and her B.S.N. from Alfred University. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau (an honor society for R.N.s) and an active member of the New York State Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (NYSACPR). Her work experience includes the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cardiology Stress Testing Department at Unity. She has been working in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center for over 20 years.
Rita McKeon, B.S., M.S., C.E.S., Exercise Physiologist
Rita received her B.S. in physical education with a concentration on adult fitness and a minor in dance from the State University of New York at Brockport. Her M.S. in exercise science is from the University of Buffalo in applied physiology, and she is a certified exercise specialist from the American College of Sports Medicine. She has been working in Cardiac Rehabilitation at Unity since 2004, and she has past experience in pediatric cardiology as an exercise physiologist.
Sean Stark, B.S., M.H.A., Exercise Physiologist
Sean received his B.S. in exercise physiology from the State University of New York at Brockport and his M.A. in health administration from Roberts Wesleyan College. Sean has been with Unity’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program since 2004. He is the senior coordinator and instructor for the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program. He has experience in making presentations on fitness-related topics and is currently one of the lead instructors in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) at Unity. He has supervised and managed programs for the Wegmans Sports and Wellness Center and Bally Total Fitness.
Melanie Carvelli, R.N., B.S.N., Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse
Melanie has years of experience in the nursing field as an intensive care and cardiac care nurse. She received her R.N. from Monroe Community College and her B.S.N. from St. John Fisher College. Melanie also holds a degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Geneseo. She currently works at the Delphi Drug and Alcohol Council as a healthcare coordinator. She has worked in the Cardiac Rehabilitation field since 2002.
Daniel Rice, M.A., Exercise Physiologist
Dan received his B.S. in physical education from the State University of New York at Cortland. He received his M.A. in physical education from the University of Maryland. Dan has worked in cardiac rehabilitation for over 20 years. He has worked at F.F. Thompson in the Cardiac Rehabilitation department and as an Employee Wellness Coordinator; he continues to work at Clifton Springs Hospital and Unity Health System in Cardiac Rehabilitation.
Bernadette L. Tomasso, R.R.T., A.E.-C., C.P.F.T., Respiratory Therapist
Bernadette brings over 30 years of experience to her role as a licensed respiratory therapist. She holds National Board of Respiratory Care credentials as a registered respiratory therapist and is certifed in pulmonary function testing and as a COPD educator. She also holds a national certification as an asthma educator and is certifed as a smoking cessation facilitator through the American Lung Association.
