Healthy tips from Unity experts

Want to prepare for a healthy pregnancy? Here are a few tips that are easy for anyone to follow —even busy Moms-to-be.

  • Take a daily prenatal vitamin with folic acid starting before you get pregnant. Folic acid is a vitamin that helps reduce the risk of birth defects.
  • Eat nutritious meals that include fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. A well-balanced diet will be good for your baby and you. In fact, women who eat a healthy diet and avoid smoking, alcohol, and other risks tend to have healthier babies…and fewer complications during birth.
  • Drink 8-10 glasses of water, juice, milk or other fluids without caffeine every day. Drinking lots of healthy fluids helps prevent everything from dry skin and constipation to possible complications like preterm labor and miscarriages.
  • Get some exercise. Regular exercise boosts your energy, reduces stress, and helps keep your muscles and heart in good shape. And remember: Walking can be a great form of exercise for Moms —before and after pregnancy.
  • Avoid tobacco, drugs and alcohol. Smoking, alcohol, and drugs are bad for babies. They’re bad for you, too. So if you’re thinking about getting pregnant, take a big step towards a healthy lifestyle by giving up nicotine, drugs and alcohol right away.
