Clyde Bell
Partial and Total Knee Replacement (Right and left knee)
The Joint Replacement Center at Unity Hospital

"I have always done a lot of walking. Unfortunately, walking became more difficult as my knees worsened. My surgeon said that the pain in my knee was caused by bone rubbing against bone. I have a high threshold for pain, but missed walking long distances and must admit, I had let the discomfort go on long enough." In October 2003 Clyde had a partial knee replacement and in May 2004 he had his left knee totally replaced. A vital and active 80-year old gentleman, Clyde continues to volunteer at the Red Cross, walks multiple miles daily (even in very cold weather), and travels with his wife to visit family out of state. "I may not have the energy of a 21-year old, but all things considered I feel great and enjoy the activity my new knees allow."

Clyde 's experience at the Joint Replacement Center at Unity Hospital was a very positive one. He especially enjoyed Deb Wellington, the orthopaedic program director, and her compassionate yet no-nonsense approach to pre-surgery education and post-surgery encouragement. "The nurses were very friendly and caring and the physical therapy was excellent. I received a lot of support from the staff and the patients. We encouraged one another to get up and move after surgery ... there was no time to be a sissy. We all worked very hard and most of us even went home within a few days!"
